Cheering-up website lifts weary Japanese

A Japanese-lang...a.jp/homeSalon/, dubbed ‘‘Homerare Salon (Salon to be praised),’’ about 50 phrases of praise along with heart symbols pop up across the window on the computer screen after a visitor enters his or her name, sex and occupation.

Digitalbank Co, an Internet venture affiliated with the publisher of the local newspaper Oita Godo Shimbun circulating in Oita Prefecture, southwestern Japan, set up the site on Dec 24 last year, initially for Christmas, but traffic surged after it was featured in April on search sites Hatena and Google. Kiriko Sato, 35, and Satoshi Itai, 29, of the Oita-based venture engineered the site, saying they wanted visitors to lighten up by viewing the site at such times as when they are feeling down in the dumps from exhaustion or making a mistake at work.
